💬 Overview:
Hidden beneath the surface of present-day Gaia lies a story long erased from the cityscape – yet never fully forgotten.
In the early 14th century, a vibrant Jewish community flourished along the southern banks of the Douro River. Today, no buildings survive. No inscriptions remain. But the land remembers -and so the people.
Join Once Upon a Time in Porto for an unforgettable journey through silence and memory. Led by local archaeologists, this tour will uncover the invisible traces of Gaia’s lost Jewish Quarter – a place that once echoed with life, commerce, ritual, and resilience. With no visible ruins to guide us, we’ll rely on something far more powerful: the shape of the landscape, ancient written records, and the whispered memory of those who still call this place Monte dos Judeus, the Hill of the Jews.
Along the way, we’ll also explore the deep historical ties between Gaia and Porto’s own Jewish Quarter, uncovering shared stories of expulsion, survival, and endurance – and reflecting on what still lingers beneath cobblestones and collective memory.
This is not just a walking tour. It’s a quiet search for what history tried to erase.
