“Bix” Beiderbecke (Davenport, Iowa, Março de 1903 — Queens, Agosto de 1931), foi um cornetista/trompetista, pianista e compositor de jazz dos Estados Unidos da América. Juntamente com Louis Armstrong, Beiderbecke foi um dos solistas de jazz mais influentes da América. A sua característica forma de tocar em particular (aprendeu a tocar “de ouvido”, o que o levou a adoptar uma maneira de tocar diferente, não-académica, que alguns críticos musicais atribuem ao seu som original), mostrou uma rara pureza de timbre e jeito para a improvisação. Bix morreu, sozinho, no dia 6 de agosto de 1931, num quarto do Queens, em Nova York, num surto de “delirium tremens” devido à dependência do álcool. Embora a causa oficial, segundo as autoridades, tenha sido pneumonia lombar, a maioria dos amigos, músicos próximos e historiadores concorda que o alcoolismo agudo foi responsável pelo declínio de sua saúde física e mental no último ano de sua vida. Contudo, segundo relatórios médicos, os sintomas de Beiderbecke eram “dificilmente consistentes com o uso prolongado de álcool, e tudo indicava para um envenenamento súbito e agudo!” Tendo em conta que entre 1920 a 1933 foi instaurada a “Lei Seca”, durante a qual a fabricação, transporte e venda de bebidas alcoólicas para consumo foram banidas nacionalmente, o governo envenenava, ou “desnaturava”, qualquer álcool fabricado, a fim de evitar que fosse consumido como bebida. Pode-se concluir que foi o alcool desnaturado – não o vício em álcool – o que matou Beiderbecke? Foi Beiderbecke envenenado pelo Governo Federal? Inspirado na vida de Bix Beiderbecke, Young Man with a Horn foi baseado no romance de 1938 de mesmo nome de Dorothy Baker. Dirigido pelo génio Michael Curtiz (que produziu obras-primas como “Casablanca”, “The Adventures Of Robin Hood”, “The Charge Of The Light Brigade”, “Mildred Pierce” e mais de 150 outros títulos), destaca Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall, Doris Day, compositor-pianista Hoagy Carmichael, trompetista Harry James, entre outros atores/músicos.

“Bix” Beiderbecke (March 1903, Davenport, Iowa – August 1931, Queens) was an American cornetist/trumpeter, pianist, and jazz composer. Along with Louis Armstrong, Beiderbecke was one of America’s most influential jazz soloists. His characteristic way of playing in particular (he learned to play “by ear”, which led him to adopt a different, non-academic way of playing, which some music critics attribute to his original sound), showed a rare purity of timbre and a knack for improvisation. Bix died, alone, on August 6, 1931, in a bedroom in Queens, New York, from an outbreak of “delirium tremens” due to alcohol dependence. Although the official cause, according to the authorities, was lumbar pneumonia. However, most friends, close musicians and historians agree that acute alcoholism was responsible for the decline in his physical and mental health in the last year of his life. However, according to medical reports, Beiderbecke’s symptoms were “hardly consistent with prolonged alcohol use, and everything pointed to sudden and acute poisoning!” Bearing in mind that between 1920 and 1933 the “Prohibition Law” was introduced, during which the manufacture, transport and sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption were banned nationally, the government poisoned, or “denatured”, any alcohol manufactured, in order to prevent it from being consumed as a drink. Can it be concluded that it was denatured alcohol – not alcohol addiction – that killed Beiderbecke? Was Beiderbecke poisoned by the Federal Government? Inspired by the life of Bix Beiderbecke, Young Man with a Horn was based on the 1938 novel of the same name by Dorothy Baker. Directed by genius Michael Curtiz (who produced masterpieces like “Casablanca”, “The Adventures Of Robin Hood”, “The Charge Of The Light Brigade”, “Mildred Pierce” and over 150 other titles), it features Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall, Doris Day, composer-pianist Hoagy Carmichae and trumpeter Harry James, among other actors/musicians.
