Desde 2017, o BEAST International Film Festival vem revelando-se ao público como um evento que objetiva iluminar a cena do cinema da Europa de Leste. Sua quarta edição acontece, contudo, em um contexto diferente, de muitas mudanças para o mundo e para os sectores culturais e criativos devido à COVID-19.
Com os desafios gerados pela pandemia e a viabilidade de uma experiência online completa, o BEAST IFF arranca de 24 a 28 de março em parceria com a plataforma de streaming Filmin Portugal. Nascida de uma iniciativa de colaboração e diálogo entre operadores cinematográficos portugueses, críticos, festivais e instituições culturais nacionais e internacionais, a Filmin é a principal plataforma de streaming de cinema independente em Portugal.
Este ano, a Roménia é o foco do festival por meio do programa Focus Country, que estreia na Sessão de Abertura um dos documentários mais aclamados de 2020: “Ivana The Terrible”, o segundo longa da realizadora Ivana Mladenović. O programa também incluirá sessões dedicadas a outros documentários da Roménia, como o longa “Acasa, My Home”, do realizador e jornalista investigativo Radu Ciorniciuc, e “The Distance Between Me and Me”, longa das diretoras Dana Bunescu e Mona Nicoară, que abre espaço para reflexões profundas a partir da figura icônica da artista romena Nina Cassian.
Para além do Focus Country, as secções competitivas EastWave, EastDoc e experimentalEAST também serão destaques do festival, com médias e curtas metragens que mostram o trabalho de jovens talentos emergentes da Europa Central e de Leste. Estes programas estarão disponíveis até 4 de abril para subscritores da Filmin ou por meio do formato pay-per-view da plataforma. Junto ao website de streaming português, outras plataformas como Vimeo, YouTube, Twitch, Facebook e Instagram também hospedarão exibições, eventos, live streams e Q&As do BEAST IFF.
Após o fim de março, o BEAST IFF se estenderá até 1º de junho com exibições mensais especiais, eventos e a realização do projeto Visegrad Film Hub, que promete trazer ainda mais novidades do circuito de cinema da Europa de Leste a Portugal, como exibições únicas, workshops e masterclasses com talentos da indústria.
O projeto Visegrad Film Hub é composto pelas secções V4 Screen e V4 Academy e é co-financiado pelos governos da República Checa, Hungria, Polónia e Eslováquia por meio do International Visegrad Fund, em uma iniciativa colaborativa com várias instituições dos países #V4.
Caso as diretrizes de saúde portuguesas atestem a segurança para eventos presenciais limitados durante os meses de abril a junho, essas atividades serão realizadas em sítios culturais como o Cinema da Trindade, Cinema Passos Manuel, Casa das Artes e a Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett.

Since 2017, BEAST International Film Festival has presented itself to the public as an event with the goal of shining a light on Eastern European cinema. Its fourth edition, however, will take place under a different context, one of major changes for the world and the cultural and creative sectors because of Covid-19.
Due to the challenges created by the pandemic and the viability of an enriching online experience, BEAST IFF kicks off from March 24th to the 28th in partnership with the Filmin Portugal streaming platform. Born from a collaboration and dialogue initiative between Portuguese cinematographic operators, critics, festivals and national as well as international cultural institutions, Filmin is the main independent cinema streaming platform in the country.
This year, Romania is the focus of the festival through the Focus Country program, which debuts at the Opening Session one of the most acclaimed documentaries of 2020: “Ivana The Terrible”, director Ivana Mladenović’s second feature. The section will also include sessions dedicated to other documentary films from Romania, such as the critically praised “Acasa, My Home”, a film by director and investigative journalist Radu Ciorniciuc, and “The Distance Between Me and Me”, a feature-length documentary by directors Dana Bunescu and Mona Nicoară, which elicits deep reflections around the iconic figure of Romanian artist Nina Cassian.
Besides Focus Country, the EastWave, EastDoc and experimentalEAST competitive sessions are also highlights of the festival, featuring mid-length and short films that show the work of emerging young talents from Central and Eastern Europe. These sessions will be available until April 4th for Filmin subscribers or via the platform’s pay-per-view model. Along with the Portuguese streaming website, other platforms such as Vimeo, YouTube, Twitch, Facebook and Instagram will also host BEAST IFF’s exhibitions, events, live streams and Q&As.
After the end of March, BEAST IFF will continue until June 1st with special monthly screenings, events and the Visegrad Film Hub, which promises to bring more trends from the Eastern European cinema circuit to Portugal, such as unique exhibitions, workshops and masterclasses by industry talents.
The Visegrad Film Hub is made up of the V4 Screen and V4 Academy sections and is co financed by the governments of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia through the International Visegrad Fund, in collaboration with several institutions from the #V4 countries.
Should current Portuguese health measures attest to the safety of limited on-site events during the months of April and June, these activities will be held in cultural venues such as Cinema da Trindade, Cinema Passos Manuel, Casa das Artes and the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library.
